Introduction
There was a time when the label “Made in Italy” meant that a product had been branded for greatness. A stamp of approval confirming that it was made by skilled hands with the best materials. Today, through modernization of global markets, this “stamp” as lost its lustre. This has happened in the past, when in the 17th century the French Haute Couture trampled the Italian fashion industry and it would not recover until the early 1950’s. The fear now is that history may be repeating itself and many old school designers are left scrambling to adapt.
After World War II, when many Italians immigrated, in great numbers, to Canada, they brought with them this passion for workmanship. This documentary seeks to tell the story of some of these Italian immigrants and the influence they had on the fashion world. We have a rare opportunity to film these pioneers before they take their final bow and walk away from the industry forever. These are men that started their businesses over forty years ago and have had to completely change the way they did business in order to stay alive.
